Oliver’s solo pentathlon breaks records

Oliver Wakefield has been the dominant Northern Irish U13 this year and could be said to have been racing on his own throughout the season. It was no big deal then on Saturday when he was in a field of one in the U13 pentathlon at the NI Combined Events Championships. Despite an almost neglible 29 points at 800m, clearly not his event, Oliver scored a club record 1674 points, a score which takes him to the top of the UK Power of Ten rankings. The opening 75m hurdles produced 584 of those points with a clocking of 12.18 sec, only his second outing at hurdles, a club record and possible NI best – certainly in the last  decade. He putted 8.30m at shot (384 pts), long jumped 4.88m (360 pts) and high jumped 1.40m (317 pts) before closing with 3:06.20 min at 800m. He could well have collected more points in HJ as the bar went up in 5cm increments and not the specified 3 cms.

In the associated Open Meeting, Gareth Lyness ran 12.74 sec for 100m, 26.19 for 200m and 59.54 for 400m.
