Power NI Super 5 Series Underway at Mary Peters

On Thursday, Lagan Valley AC hosted the first of their Power NI sponsored ‘Super 5’ meetings,  all to be held at the newly refurbished Mary Peters Track. The weather was again poor, cold and wet, but the entry, across all ages, was massive.  Despite all efforts, the programme was going to run well behind schedule but there was a real test of the quality of the lights (excellent) and the car parking (hopeless).  North Down’s Fundamentals Group were out in force and were the stars of the  early races, seeming to win 4 or 5  heats on the trot at one point. A long while later, Rachel Gibson won the final event, the womens 1500m, to close the meeting.

With up to 40 or more contestants in many age groups, there were loads of heats, 40 plus in all, so we can only give overall ratings, Some of the Fundamentals Group ran as U11 and  some as U13, depending on their  age on 1st Sept 2013 but all were great. Dylan Galloway, was 2nd overall  at 80m , running  12.70 and Angus Christie was 5th in 12.84. Johnny Moore was 2nd overall in the U13 100m in 14.31 with Rebecca Webb our best girl in 14.92.  Megan Drummond was the class of the U11’s, winning 80m in 12.79 and long jump with 3.23m.  At 1000m, Dylan was 5th and Annabel  McNutt was 2nd girl in 3:50.68 min.

At U15 level, Oliver Wakefield would not have been happy with his run-up but was 1st  in the long jump with 5.41m, though well off the board.  Olivia Cumming won the girls event with  4.40m and Saskia Greer was 4th at 100m in 13.82. Elleana  Hull was 2nd in the U17 100m in 13.36 sec.

Most of the club senior athletes gave the meeting a miss, having been there  before and rightly suspicious of a late night. Rachel Gibson though did stick it out to the bitter end and was rewarded with win in 4:52.82 min at 1500m against good opposition, to close the meeting.
