Record numbers selected for NI

Original selections never end up as the eventual competing team but North Down look set to have a record number competing for Northern Ireland/ Ulster over the weekend of 7th/8th August.

Saturday sees the Celtic Junior International at Grangemouth where Ulster take on AAI, Scotland, and Wales at U16 and U18 level (as at 31st December). In the U16 girls Kim Shaw gets both sprints and relay with Kiki Malomo Paris relay and reserve 100m, and Katie Hewitt reserve hurdles and long jump. U16 boys are Jordan Neil at 1500m and David Keys at discus, with Mark Atkinson relay and reserve 100m, and Ben McDonald reserve javelin.

Amy Foster gets both sprints and relay at U18 level. Caroline Oakes gets javelin and Erin Mullan the 80mH and reserve 300mH. U18 boys chosen are Peter Glass at hurdles, javelin and relay while Aaron Stirling gets hammer and Joe Kingsberry is reserve at throws.

The following day sees a U20/U23 match at Derby between Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and the three English regions. Not all events are covered because selections are standards driven. U20 athletes are Luke Reynolds at 110mH, David Robb at high jump, Philip Browne at long jump, Jeremy Harper at shot and discus. In the U23’s Michael Dyer goes at 800m and Michael McConkey at javelin.

For good measure the NI Combined Events Championships are at Antrim the same weekend.
