At midday on Saturday 11th February North Down AC’s long distance specialist, Seán Nickell was among 69 runners who took to the start line at Florida Manor near Killinchy for the latest Last One Standing Race. This involves runners completing a 4.2 mile loop on mixed terrain roads and trails in the estate grounds in less than 60 minutes as the race restarts on the hour every hour until only one runner completes the lap. Every other runner who takes more than an hour to complete their lap or who doesn’t start the lap is listed as DNF in the results. Seán who is recovering from injury ran further than he has since September and completed 14 laps or 100km and elected not to restart lap 15. “Not bad for a training run,” he joked as he received his official DNF and 50 mile club medals at 2am!
Wayne McGuigan of Slieve Gullion Runners eventually became Last One Standing as he completed lap 36, a distance of more than 150 miles. Ballydrain Harriers’ Adam McKee was the last runner to record a DNF, narrowly timing out on the 36th lap.
