The Senior Championships, incorporating the Commonwealth Games Trials took place on Saturday. While the weather was otherwise excellent, the swirling wind played havoc with the gauge readings, deeply frustrating athletes. For instance Jason Smyth won the 100m and the CG standard with a legal wind reading while Amy Foster in the very next race was outside the wind limit and no standard or record.
North Down athletes did well with Eva Massey returning to action with gold at shot and discus (with Kathy Hetherington 2nd at discus and 4th at shot), Ben Reynolds and Tom Reynolds 1st and 2nd at 110m hurdles, other silvers at long jump for Tom Reynolds and Hannah Lewis and silvers to Pete Glass at shot and discus, to Mark Patterson at 400m with a pb and to Nicola Simpson at 800m. Bronzes included Laura Loughlin at triple jump, Jodie Murphy at 100m hurdles and high jump (with Kerrie Craig 4th), Brendan McConville at pole vault and Niall Robinson at 1500m. Adam McComb reached the 400m final and won the U19 age group medal.
