Stormont trail: North Down women win xc league

[Not a valid template]North Down’s women’s team kept their pole position going into the final race of the NI XC League to win the League for the 2nd year running. 10 North Down athletes toed the line for the 74 strong women’s race with Jessica Craig coming home 4th after losing some time being mis-directed by a race marshal. Next home were: Steph Hambling 7th, Julie Balmer 12th and Katie Moore 18th – making her senior team debut.

The men’s team comprised 12 athletes but missing some useful scorers on the day and so slipped from 3rd to equal 4th overall. Francis Marsh was first home for North Down in 8th out of the large 134 strong field, followed by: Dennis Scott 15th, Gerry Coy 43rd, Lloyd Hannigan 45th and Charlie McNutt 50th. Gerry returned to racing the following day to place 4th in the Ben Dearg 10k (38:18).

The club were well represented in the junior age group races with Chloe Johnston placing 2nd in the U17 girls and Lauren Hamilton 8th in the big U13 field. In the boys races: Corey Brown 4th, Jamie McMeechan 5th and Ciaran Farren 6th managed great packing in the U17 race with only 10 seconds between them, with Charlie Quinn in 8th. Running with the u17s, Craig McMeechan finished strong as usual to place 6th out of the U15s.
