[Not a valid template]The transition may have been eased by the blazing sun and firm conditions but it was still a transition from road to cross country – one that North Down athletes, particularly ladies and juniors took in their stride. In the season-opening Comber Cup XC Meeting, Rachel Gibson, Jessica Craig and Kerry Speers took 1st, 2nd and 6th places and along with Catherine Roberts in 23rd were 1st team – a good start to the ANI Cross country League. The juniors were dominant with Amelia Tyler 1st Primary School girl, Craig McMeechan 1st U16 boy and Murphy Miller 1st U14 girl. In fact club U14 girls had 5 of the top 6 places. James Budde, Chris Speers, Ben Caughers and Nick Irvine were the scorers in the mens’Comber Cup and there was plenty of back-up in both main races. For good measure Terry Eakin was 1st M60 and Fred Murdoch 2nd M70.
The ladies race was excellent with 5 main contenders taking it to the wire. Jessica was a strong leader in the 1st lap with Rachel 3rd and Rachel took over for most of the 2nd lap. From then on, it was constantly changing with Catherine O’Çonnor of East Down seeming to have it with 400m to go. Jessica the surged from 5th to 1st with Rachel behind. It looked over but there was one more twist as Rachel’s kick at the end took the race. Kerry stayed strong while Catherine fought off Valerie McDonough for the scoring place.
