This weekend featured races at East Antrim, Benone, the Great North Run and Belgium where our runners participated.
East Antrim Half Marathon
Colin Walker continued his racing agenda with a half marathon as part of the East Antrim Marathon series. His dedication over the recent months resulted in a win over the distance and a welcome acknowledgement of his commitment for the New Beginnings coach.
Benone Half Marathon and 10k
Enjoying the surroundings of the north coast Helen Byers, James Barr and Michael Stevenson found a 10k and half marathon race around the town of Benone. At the last minute Helen opted for the half marathon route, this after finishing first female in the Limavady park run. Helen finished the half in 32nd on 2:01:14, Michael Stevenson ran the 10k race and finished in a credible 15th in 51:03 while James Barr completed in 51:19 and 17th place.
Great North Run
The popular half marathon starting in Newcastle upon Tyne and finishing in South Shields attracted over 57,000 runners this year and Ben Caughers featured in the company of Mo Farah and other world class athletes to finish in 79:41 and 160th place.
Flanders Field Marathon
Sunday also saw the Flanders Fields marathon in Belgium, a race in which the fallen heroes from the first world war were remembered. The runners passed by a site known as the “death trench” and a lone piper was playing the sound drifting across the battlefields, touching as the runners passed by. Rab Martin continued on his tour of marathons and made the most of his visit to the region, including running the race.
