The Ulster Schools Championships took place on Tuesday at City of Belfast Playing Fields, Mallusk in bright but bitterly cold and windy conditions. The races are very high standard and include not only the cream of young cross country runners from nine counties but many top performers from other sports. Club members from the endurance groups did well, kick-started in the opening 1700m race for Mini Girls (Year 8} where Murphy Miller (Strathearn) was 4th in6:59 min. In the equivalent boys’ race John McNally (Sullivan) was 18th.
The Minor Girls ran over 2000m with Mollie Brown (Glenlola) 6th in 8:26, Jessica Scott (Lagan College) 7th in 8:31 and Anna Scott 21st. In the Minor Boys race over 2300m, Aaron Sexton (BGS), the one with the sprinting pedigree was 12th in 10:14. Junior Girls also ran over 2300m and there Lauren Hamilton (Regent House) was 21st and Nia McNally (Sullivan) was 24th. Craig McMeechan (BGS) was 14th in the 4700m Inter Boys race.
The chill factor from the wind was very pronounced as the Senior races ended the programme. The girls race was a bit short for Katie Moore (Bloomfield) who was 6th in 17:49. Chloe Johnston (Strathearn) was 25th. In the 6200m Senior boys race, Corey Brown (Down High) was 35th.
