North Down AC were well represented at Victoria Park on Saturday 23rd September as the park hosted the 2023 NI Senior and Master’s Road Relays Championships. The club had 2 teams in the Ladies Seniors and 3 teams in the Ladies Masters, and 2 teams in the Mens Seniors and 4 teams in the Mens Masters . The North Down Men claimed 2nd place in both the Seniors and Masters. In teams of 4 each athlete ran 2 anti-clockwise laps of the park, or a little under 2 miles, before handing over to their next team mate.
The Ladies Senior A team of Rachel Gibson, Clair Quigley, Lucy Cheatley and Rebecca Laffin finished 4th in 50:48 and the Senior B team comprising Lois Harkin, Olivia Coming, Natasha Hughes and Stephanie Graham were 13th in 58:49.
The Ladies Masters A Team – Clair Quigley, Lisa Tomalin, Stephanie Graham and Fiona McVicker were 8th in 52:42. The B Team were Wendy Neely, Emma Fox, Caroline Coghlin and Kate Ferguson and they finished 13th in 1:01:01. The C team of June McMinn, Abby Andrews, Lisa McMeechan and Claire Scott finished 17th in 1:03:01.
In the Senior Mens Race, Newcastle AC A took top spot in 39:14 with North Down AC’s A team of Daniel Dines, Craig McMeechan (who ran the fastest NDAC spilt of the day – 9:42), Mark Carberry and Jamie McMeechan finishing 2nd in 40:49. The B team, Ollie Playfair, Dean Varley, Kevin Harkin and Jack Russell doing his second run finished 9th in 44:28.
In the Masters , the A team of Chris Moran, Jack Russell, James Graham and Francis Marsh were narrowly pipped from the top step of the podium by North Belfast Harriers who finished in 42:26. NDAC placed second in 42:54. The B team – Steven Donegan, Nick Irvine, Andy Lowry and Alasdair Mair were 7th in 44:41. The C team – Alan McConnell, David Massey, Michael Hennessy and Aaron McAuley were 13th in 47:29 while the D team of Philip Mulligan, Alan Massey, Gerry O’Boyle and Colin Walker, with a combined age of 221 according to the team’s accountant, finished 19th in 50:24.
