We Are The Champions

[Not a valid template][Not a valid template]Two British Team titles in one day!  Northern Ireland athletes and clubs were on fire at Stormont on Saturday, none more so than North Down, as the British and Irish Masters Championships returned to the province. It had been no secret that North Down men fancied the over 60 title, hence the recent Dad”s Army excursions, but it was the blistering form of the women that stood out.

New vet Roberta Dornan took silver at F35, Stephanie Hambling and Debbie Matchett took silver and bronze respectively at F40 – together they won the blue riband F35-49 team race. Terry Eakin, David Seaton and Pat O”Driscoll were 5th, 12th and 20th at M60, Fred Murdoch and Brian Smith were 4th and 5th at M65 – together they won the M60-69 team title. No more Dad”s Army cracks then. Another bronze medal went to Francis Marsh, running under the Herne Hill banner in the M40 race while Stephen Purdie at M50 and Ken Hawtin at M70 had good runs.

The other blue riband team title went to Annadale Striders at M35-49 plus gold to Dave Morwood and Stevie Cairns at M35 and M40 with North Belfast runners up.
