Results from Round 2 of the Woodies AAI National League Round 2 last Sunday are at last available. Round 2 was in Sligo so the North Down wagons headed West. That is as many wagons as good be found in the Twelth Weekend. In the event we only mustered 8 men who covered 15 events and 5 girls who covered 11 events. That left both teams well down on their possible targets and it was going to be tough going.
[Not a valid template]The men were experienced and in cracking form. The first few events were blistering with Callum Hunter winning the opening 110m hurdles, Kenny Elliott the 400m hurdles, Adam McComb the 400m, Curtis Woods the 200m and Alan Kennedy the long jump plus a second in the 4 x 100m and a third at javelin by Paddy McGrattan. The shortage of athletes, particularly at middle distance, was always going to cost but we made it that the men scored 96 points, excellent for 15 events. Combining the two rounds and two sets of two venues leaves the men 6th overall and into the final. Job done.
[Not a valid template]Apart from team Captain Kathy Hetherington, the girls were all very young and inexperienced at this level but all did their best. Kathy did her stuff, winning both shot and discus, and Sarah Connolly won the high jump but it was just impossible to cover enough events. They were not helped by poor organisation with the standard timetable just not working at Sligo where it was impossible to do javelin and discus at the same time and there was a shortage of officials. The programme got well behind, events clashed and some athletes missed events. The sun shone and the girls did all they could but there were too many events and 56 points from 11 events was not quite enough to avoid the relegation zone. Next year in Division 1 it will be different.
