The University of Ulster’s Coleraine campus was the venue for the Intermediate and Masters championships hosted by Athletics NI on Saturday.
Mens team captain John McGarvey succeeded in getting 13 men onto the start line of the Intermediate race which was now being run over 7 laps of a reduced loop. The only omission from the original loop was the hill inside the trees so an additional lap more than compensated.
Jamie McMeechan took the honour of first man home finishing in 27th. He was followed home by the ever youthful Mark Weir 41st and Darren Hamilton 49th. The six man team was completed with David McMeechan 55th, Colin Walker 58th and Eamon O’Reilly 60th.
The remaining male athletes grouped well with Robert Martin, Alan Massey and Frank Rea finishing together while Philip Mulligan, Paul Galloway, Donald Smith and Trevor Patterson completed the North Down team.
Result of the day was in the ladies Masters race where Jodi Smith ran with complete control to finish 4th, only 15 seconds behind the winner. Jodi was joined in the race by Helen Byers who ran well over the testing surface to finish in 42nd.
Well done to all who competed in difficult, although it was better than forecast, weather conditions. Underfoot was very soft for large sections of the course which more than made up for lack of hills.
Thanks to Davie Seaton, Brian Smith and Tony Wall who yet again gave up their time to assist ANI in running the event.
