On New Years Day, four hundred athletes were at the scenic Glenariff Forest Park just outside Waterfoot (County Antrim) for the 19th annual running of Ballymena Runners’ Race Over the Glens. The 6 mile race had a fast road section before climbing to the course’s highest point followed by a long descent and then another climb and descent. In a very strong field, top North Down competitors were Stephen Wylie, 7th in 38:44 min, and Catherine Roberts, 20th lady in 52:33. Another 4 followed. Overall winners were course specialist Jarlath Falls (Ballymena & Antrim) and Shalene McMurray.

At races held in very windy conditions in the Titanic Quarter, Gareth Watton came 3rd at 5K in 18:20 min and at 10K, Gary Swenarton was 20th in 41:35, Nikki Gardiner came 28th and 4th lady in 44:11 and Pat O’Driscoll was 95th in 53:18.
